Description

In healthy churches, the elected and pastoral leaders are competent, have a vibrant walk with Jesus and can effectively lead change. Competency is demonstrated through expertise, clear communication, integrity, and demonstrating emotionally healthy behavior. Leaders are dedicated to growing deeper in their relationship with Christ, spending regular time in worship, prayer, and study, as well as practicing the spiritual disciplines. Healthy leaders are agile, able to adapt to new realities.

Guiding Scripture Passages

1 Tim. 4:6-10

If you put these instructions before the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound teaching that you have followed. 7 Have nothing to do with profane myths and old wives’ tales. Train yourself in godliness, 8 for, while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 9 The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. 10 For to this end we toil and struggle, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

Considerations Regarding Your Score

  • Is there accountability amongst church leaders regarding healthy spiritual practices followed? What could you put in place?
  • What process is in place for leadership accountability?
  • Are the leaders emotionally healthy? What expressions of a lack of emotional health have occurred and how were they addressed?
  • How can the church leadership effectively lead change in the church? What changes need to occur?
